Fibre Expansion Sparks a New Phase of Kenya’s Digital Growth

Kenya’s internet connectivity  s expanding rapidly, with fixed fibre subscriptions rising 373% from 268,753 in 2019 to 1.27 million by Q3 2025, driven by stronger demand for faster, more reliable broadband. At the same time, the country’s fibre network grew from 22,486 km in 2022 to 30,454 km in 2025, supported by government-led digital transformation and wider rollout plans across all 47 counties, including schools and hospitals. Major providers such as Safaricom (815,037 subscribers), Jamii Telecommunications (466,458), and Wananchi Group (270,320) continue to drive adoption, while competition from players like Poa Internet and Mawingu is helping diversify the market. Despite this momentum, rural rollout remains constrained by high deployment costs, right of-way fees, insecurity, and regulatory bottlenecks, which could challenge Kenya’s target of 100,000 km of fibre by 2027.
